Post Office & Education
What does the post office have in common with public education today? Both are considering cutting the number of days for service. Losing postal service on Saturday is one thing, but cutting school to four (4) days per week, will have a huge negative impact upon our children. Not to mention the impacts to working parents who must now solve this added child care issue. I recently read an article about charter schools where the school day was lengthened by an hour, with student performance increasing dramatically. One common sense solution. More classroom time directly relates to better performance.
One definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results. If your children are failing, maybe they need more time in school. Maybe we need another two (2) hours of education five days a week. That would add ten (10) hours of schooling per week for our children, an increase from 40 hours to 50 hours of class time. Instead, regulators are discussing adding 2 hrs per school day, but only for four (4) days per week. This is nothing more than another hurdle for our children to overcome in the global marketplace.
If you cannot read by the 3rd grade….you should not be socially promoted, such that you drop out in a higher grade. Parents read to your children. Have your child repeat the 3rd grade level, if they are not up to speed. Your children are not like the postal service. We cannot just cut services and shrug our shoulders asking why we have schooling five (5) days a week anyway. We need to expect better performance. Our government is failing us. Teachers, voters, we must expect more and yes the compensation may be less. Our children who will be paying for our irresponsible spending need the education to lead our country and our nation out of this economic situation. I ask for your vote to improve New Mexico.
